God commits Himself to you first.
1 John 4:19
We love him, because he first loved us.
Psalm 84
¹⁰ For a day in your courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
¹² O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusts in you.
Recorded at Dales and Wales Bible week, 1985.
Matthew 6 [Jesus says]
¹⁹ 'Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust do corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: ²⁰ but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust do corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: ²¹ for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.'
Luke 18
¹ And he spoke a parable to them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; ² saying,
'There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: ³ and there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying,
'Avenge me of mine adversary.'
⁴ And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself,
'Though I fear not God, nor regard man; ⁵ yet because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.' '
⁶ And the Lord said, 'Hear what the unjust judge says.
⁷ And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night to him, though he bear long with them? ⁸ I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man comes, shall he find faith on the earth?'
⁹ And he spoke this parable to certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
¹⁰ 'Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself,
'God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.'
¹³ And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven, but smote [hit] upon his breast, saying,
'God be merciful to me a sinner.'
¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.' '
Luke 18
¹⁵ And they brought to him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
[Matthew 19 vv 13 +14]
¹⁶ But Jesus called them to him, and said, 'Suffer little children to come to me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
[Matthew 18 vv 1 - 4] ¹⁷
Verily I say to you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.'
¹⁸ And a certain ruler asked him, saying, 'Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?'
[Mark 10 vv 17 - 22]
¹⁹ And Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
²⁰ You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness [lie], Honour your father and your mother.'
²¹ And he said, 'All these have I kept from my youth up.'
²² Now when Jesus heard these things, he said to him, 'Yet you lack one thing: sell all that you have, and distribute to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.'
²³ And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
²⁴ And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, 'How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
²⁵ For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.'
²⁶ And they that heard it said, 'Who then can be saved?'
²⁷ And he said, 'The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.'
²⁸ Then Peter said, 'Lo, we have left all, and followed you.'
²⁹ And he said to them, Verily I say to you, 'There is no man that has left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, ³⁰ who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.'
Luke 18
³¹ Then he took to him the twelve, and said to them, 'Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.
³² For he shall be delivered to the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: ³³ and they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.'
³⁴ And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
³⁵ And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh to Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging: ³⁶ and hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant.
³⁷ And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passes by. ³⁸ And he cried, saying, 'Jesus, you Son of David, have mercy on me.'
³⁹ And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, 'You Son of David, have mercy on me.'
⁴⁰ And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought to him: and when he was come near, he asked him, ⁴¹ saying, 'What wilt you that I shall do to you?' And he said, 'Lord, that I may receive my sight.'
⁴² And Jesus said to him, 'Receive your sight: your faith has saved you.'
⁴³ And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.
Luke 18 ²⁸ Peter said, 'Lo, we have left all and followed you.' ²⁹ And [Jesus] said, 'Verily I say to you all, there is no man who has left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake,³⁰ who shall not receive ... and in the world to come, life everlasting.'
Luke 19
¹ And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
² And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans [tax collectors], and he was rich.
³ And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
⁴ And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
⁵ And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said to him, 'Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at your house.'
⁶ And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
⁷ And when they [the crowd] saw it, they all murmured, saying, 'That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.'
⁸ And Zacchaeus stood, and said to the Lord; 'Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.'
⁹ And Jesus said to him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. ¹⁰ For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.'
2 Corinthians 4
¹ Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; ² but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
³ But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: ⁴ in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine to them.
⁵ For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.
⁶ For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
⁷ But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
...
¹⁶ For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
¹⁷ For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; ¹⁸ while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Thee will I love, my Strength, my Tower,
Thee will I love, my Joy, my Crown,
Thee will I love with all my power,
In all Thy works, and Thee alone;
Thee will I love, till the pure fire
Fill my whole soul with chaste desire.
Ah, why did I so late Thee know, Thee, lovelier than the sons of men! Ah, why did I no sooner go To Thee, the only ease in pain! Ashamed, I sigh, and inly mourn, That I so late to Thee did turn.
In darkness willingly I strayed, I sought Thee, yet from Thee I roved; Far wide my wandering thoughts were spread, Thy creatures more than Thee I loved; And now if more at length I see, 'Tis through Thy light and comes from Thee.
I thank Thee, uncreated Sun, That Thy bright beams on me have shined; I thank Thee, who hast overthrown My foes, and healed my wounded mind; I thank Thee, whose enlivening voice Bids my freed heart in Thee rejoice.
Uphold me in the doubtful race, Nor suffer me again to stray; Strengthen my feet with steady pace Still to press forward in Thy way; My soul and flesh, O Lord of might, Fill, satiate, with Thy heavenly light.
Give to mine eyes refreshing tears, Give to my heart chaste, hallowed fires, Give to my soul, with filial fears, The love that all Heaven's host inspires; That all my powers, with all their might, In Thy sole glory may unite.
Thee will I love, my joy, my crown, Thee will I love, my Lord, my God; Thee will I love, beneath Thy frown, Or smile, Thy scepter, or Thy rod; What though my flesh and heart decay? Thee shall I love in endless day!
