John 1

²⁵ And they asked him, and said to him, 'Why do you baptize then, if you be not that Christ, nor Elias [Elijah], neither that prophet?'

²⁶ John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water: but there stands one among you, whom you all  know not; ²⁷ He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.'

²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁹ The next day John sees Jesus coming to him, and says,

'Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me: for he was before me.

³¹ And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.'

³² And John bore record, saying,

'I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

³³ And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said to me,

'Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Ghost.'

³⁴ And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.'

³⁵ Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; ³⁶ and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said,

'Behold the Lamb of God!'

³⁷ And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Luke 9

¹⁸ And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying,

'Whom say the people that I am?'

¹⁹ They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias [Elijah]; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.'

²⁰ He said to them,

'But whom say you all that I am?'

Peter answering said,

'The Christ of God.'

²¹ And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; ²² Saying,

'The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.'

²³ And he said to them all,

'If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

²⁴ For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

²⁵ For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

²⁶ For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

²⁷ But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.'

²⁸ And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

²⁹ And as he prayed, the fashion [appearance] of his countenance [face] was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

³⁰ And, behold, there talked with him two men, who were Moses and Elias: ³¹ who appeared in glory, and spoke of his decease [death] which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

³² But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

³³ And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said to Jesus,

'Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elias',

not knowing what he said.

³⁴ While he thus spoke, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. ³⁵ And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying,

'This is my beloved Son: hear him.'

³⁶ And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone.

And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

'All that thrills my soul is Jesus'

'I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.'

⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

⁶ And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said,

'It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.'

⁷ And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. ⁸ Wherefore that field was called,

'The field of blood',

to this day. ⁹ Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

'And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; ¹⁰ and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.'

¹¹ And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying,

'Are you the King of the Jews?'

¹² And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

¹³ Then said Pilate to him,

'Hear you not how many things they witness against thee?'

¹⁴ And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

¹⁵ Now at that feast the governor was wont [accustomed] to release to the people a prisoner, whom they would. ¹⁶ And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. ¹⁷ Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them,

'Whom will all of you that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?'

¹⁸ For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

¹⁹ When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying,

'Have nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.'

²⁰ But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

²¹ The governor answered and said to them,

'Whether of the twain [which of the two] will you all that I release to you?'

They said,

'Barabbas.'

²² Pilate said to them,

'What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ?'

They all say to him,

'Let him be crucified.'

²³ And the governor said,

'Why, what evil has he done?

But they cried out the more, saying,

'Let him be crucified.'

²⁴ When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying,

'I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see all of you to it.

²⁵ Then answered all the people, and said,

'His blood be on us, and on our children.'

³⁶ And sitting down they watched him there; ³⁷ and set up over his head his accusation written,

'THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS'.

³⁸ Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. ³⁹ And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ And saying,

'You who destroys the temple, and builds it in three days, save yourself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.'

⁴¹ Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

⁴² 'He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. ⁴³ He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, 'I am the Son of God'.'

⁴⁴ The thieves also, who were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land to the ninth hour. ⁴⁶ And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying,

'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' that is to say,

'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'

⁴⁷ Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said,

'This man calls for Elias.' [Elijah]

⁴⁸ And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. ⁴⁹ The rest said,

'Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.'

⁵⁰ Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. [died]

⁵¹ And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent [torn] in twain [two] from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent [broken];

⁵² And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, ⁵³ and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

⁵⁴ Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying,

'Truly this was the Son of God.'

⁵⁵ And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: ⁵⁶ among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.
